  • Year 4

Welcome to Year 4 with Mrs Cook and Miss Fells!

In Year 4 we continue to support children to build their confidence, independence and curiosity. Children begin to take greater responsibility for their learning and develop skills that prepare them for Upper Key Stage 2. We have high expectations for all pupils in Year 4. we expect children to: show kindness, respect and co-operation, try their best in all areas and organise themselves and their work. English in Year 4 includes developing reading fluency and comprehension, writing in a range of styles (poem, diary, description, explanation, persuasive letter, instructions) and strengthening spelling, punctuation and grammar. In Maths the four core operations (multiplication and division up to 12x12, and addition and subtraction, up to 4-digit numbers) are practised using a range of methods and reasoning extended. Children also learn time, fractions, decimals, measurement and problem-solving skills. In Science children work scientifically to develop their understanding of animals, habitats, sound, teeth, digestion, states of matter and electricity. Topics include the Vikings, Medieval and Natural Disasters, finishing with a residential stay at St Aubin's Fort. Learning also includes Emotional Health, Music, Oracy, Design and Technology, Religious Education and Computing. We encourage families to support learning at home through regular reading, times table practise and talking about their learning at school. We are looking forward to an exciting year, full of learning, growth and memorable experiences.
